April is when I play video games as an ode to my gamertag's birthday.
This year, I decided to delve into a game called Stardew Valley. It’s an indie farming game where you inherit a farm from your grandpa and decide to leave behind your concrete-jungle life to embrace country living. You move to Pelican Town, where you meet many people, and can even date and marry one of them.
Farming, fishing, mining, and animal husbandry are the main activities that will occupy most of your time. The game is structured around four seasons: spring, summer, fall, and winter. I’ve just finished spring, started summer, and I’m hooked!
What fascinates me the most is that the entire game was created by one person. Yes, everything; the code, the art, the music, the gameplay mechanics. Eric Barone (a.k.a. ConcernedApe) spent four years building the game solo, and just before releasing he thought it was shit. But when you play it, it’s as addictive as smoking.
As I’ve grown older, I’ve started to appreciate indie games more. In the past few years I’ve played some incredible indie titles like Celeste, Guacamelee! 2, and Hollow Knight. Truly amazing stuff.
I’d totally recommend Stardew Valley to anyone looking for a laid-back, chill game. It's perfect for unwinding after work, no pressure to complete missions or fear of missing out anything. The beauty lies in its rhythm: seasons repeat, so you can always catch up later. In a way, it mirrors life itself.
Alright, now I'm going to farm some blueberries cause it's summer.
See you on the next one.
